Free online mental-health workshops for Veteran families

Open Arms has launched Stronger We Stand, a nationwide program of free, online workshops designed for Veteran families and carers supporting someone in suicidal distress or coping with suicide bereavement. The initiative expands Open Arms’ digital support so families in regional and remote areas can access timely, military-aware help.

The new format will see the introduction of live, small-group sessions delivered online; options include a 3-part foundational series and one-off topic workshops (e.g., stigma, advocacy, PTSD). Programs are facilitated by peer workers with lived experience alongside qualified clinicians.

The program is for partners, family members and carers of current or ex-serving ADF members. Open Arms is free and confidential for Veterans, serving members and immediate families.

Grand Pacific Health is engaged by Open Arms to run the workshops nationally.

One year on from the Royal Commission’s final report into Defence and Veteran suicide (with 122 recommendations), government and DVA are prioritising practical suicide-prevention supports for Veterans and their families. Stronger We Stand is part of that implementation effort, aimed at building skills, connection and early help-seeking in the home.

Participants build confidence to:

  • recognise warning signs and respond safely
  • support a loved one through crisis and recovery
  • care for their own wellbeing and reduce isolation
  • navigate services and advocacy pathways when needed.

Upcoming session dates are published online and can be booked directly. If you’re unsure which workshop fits, Open Arms can guide you 24/7 on 1800 011 046.

While these workshops are not legal services, they sit alongside many matters we help with, from DVA claims and appeals to estate/guardianship planning when mental-health support needs change. If your family is supporting a veteran and you’re also weighing up a claim, evidence gathering, or review options, we can coordinate with your clinicians so your legal pathway and wellbeing plan work together.

General information only, not legal advice. If you or someone you support is in immediate danger, call 000. For confidential counselling, contact Open Arms 24/7 on 1800 011 046.</i
